GLP Solicitors welcome housing sector reforms but urge caution around implementation details
The UK Government has recently announced a major commitment to reform the housing sector as part of the upcoming “Renter’s Rights Bill,” with the goal of addressing the substandard living conditions that have plagued tenants for too long. This comes in the wake of the tragic death of Awaab Ishak, a two-year-old child who died due to prolonged exposure to mould in his family’s flat. Awaab’s case has been a driving force behind calls for reform, and the new measures mark a victory in his name and for renters across the country.
The proposed reforms aim to set clearer responsibilities for landlords and improve living conditions, specifically by introducing fixed timescales for essential repairs and upgrades. The Deputy PM, Angela Rayner, (whose remit includes Housing) has pledged to push these measures through to help ensure that no family is left living in dangerous conditions. However, while the announcement has been met with widespread support, legal experts warn that the lack of detail surrounding the reforms raises concerns about their practical application.
